Indonesia Debates : A Brief Introduction
International Debating :
International debating between universities dates back tob efore the second
world war, with teams mainly from North America , UK and Australia. It's grew
quickly during the late 1970's. This rapid growth culminated in the first
World Debating Championship, held in January 1981.
Asian Debating :
Asian countries entered the debating arena quite late, but have nevertheless
made great progress in a very short time. Many Asian teams have performed
Creditably at the Australian Championship. The need was widely felt for an
Asian Debating Championship that would nurture and encourage the growth of
debating culture among Asian countries.
The All-Asians was thus born, with two key objectives : to advance debating
in Asia, and promote the exchange of ideas and skills among participants and
participating varsities. The first All-Asians was held at Nanyang Technological
University, Singapore, in late 1994 with a record 44 teams from all arount the
region. The second and third All-Asians were held in the Philipines, and the
fourth was finally held on the 19th - 25th May 1997 in singapore
Indonesian Debating :
Indonesia had never been mentioned in Asian debating before, but it was at the
fourth All-Asians Inter Varsity debate in Singapore that Indonesia began sending
two of its first representatives. This major step was pioneered by two universities
in Bandung and Jakarta, which happened to be Universitas Indonesia and Universitas
Katolik Parahyangan. As first comers, what a very surprising experience it was
for Indonesian debates to see how tough the competition had been, and it was
felt different to be able to compete with other countries without having a similar
event in smaller scale by which we mean among people in our country. Based on that
ground, the first Java-Overland Inter-Varsity debate proudly presents. The first
English debating championship which aim is to promote the growth of debating in
Indonesia and for lasting friendship to be fostered.
